The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Fine art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a contemporary fine art museum located in the Silo District at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, S Africa. It is the largest museum of contemporary African art in the earth.[ane]

The museum opened on September 22, 2017.[ii]

Inception and evolution [edit]

The public not-for-profit museum was commissioned through a public/private partnership between the V&A Waterfront and German man of affairs Jochen Zeitz.[iii] The Waterfront invested more than than R500 million towards its construction and infrastructure development, and although not a shareholder, Zeitz has loaned his extensive art drove for his lifetime.[3] Considered by many to exist one of the globe's leading collections of contemporary fine art from Africa and its Diaspora,[1] Zeitz'south collection includes works by such eminent artists as Chris Ofili, Kudzanai Chiurai, Kehinde Wiley, Glenn Ligon, Marlene Dumas, Wangechi Mutu, and Julie Mehretu.[three]

The Waterfront had been investigating a number of proposals regarding what to do with the celebrated Grain Silo since it was decommissioned in 2001.[3] Co-ordinate to CEO David Green, the decision to transform and renovate the edifice for the new museum would "exhale life into the Silo district and act equally a describe card to a venture that is non-commercial in nature ... specifically for the enjoyment of all the continent'due south citizens".[4] While others have noted that the strategic partnership with Zeitz too serves to connect the existing backdrop of the Waterfronts's owners (Growthpoint Properties and the Government Employees Alimony Fund) with the developing financial commune in Cape Town'southward lower CBD.[three] The conversion of the Silo building began in 2014 under the management of London-based designer, Thomas Heatherwick.[iii]

Location and architecture [edit]

The museum is located in the Silo Commune at the V&A Waterfront, on the banks of Table Bay overlooking the Atlantic Sea. The Waterfront is considered a prestigious retail and hospitality belongings, and receives effectually 24-meg local and international visitors per year.[four]

The museum building was synthetic from the conversion of the 57m tall historic Grain Silo, originally built in 1921 and decommissioned in 2001.[3] The architects, Heatherwick Studio, aimed to conserve and gloat the original construction's industrial heritage, while simultaneously excavating large open spaces from the 42 densely-packed concrete cylinders from which information technology was comprised.[5] Using a variety of concrete-cut techniques, the interior of the building was carved out to create a number of galleries and a large key atrium.[5] Disagreements between the architects and director Mark Coetzee over the number of galleries that the museum had to contain ended in what S African fine art critic Sean O'Toole has described as "poky, depression-ceilinged galleries, which ofttimes struggle to hold or reflect the ambition of the exhibiting artists".[6] The remaining concrete shafts were capped with strengthened glass in order to allow natural light to enter and create a "cathedral-like" interior.[5] From the outside, the near noticeable change to the original construction was the addition of pillowed glass panels in the building'southward upper floors.[5]

Overall the 9,500sqm circuitous consists of nine floors with 6,000sqm of dedicated white cube exhibition space.[4] Additionally in that location are eighteen educational areas included on one floor, a sculpture garden on the lower office of the roof, equally well as a cafe, restaurant and store.[7] The higher office of the building operates as The Silo Hotel, which opened its doors in March 2017.[8]

The building fabricated it onto the Regal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International List 2018.[ix]
